I was born in 1970 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where my parents were also born. As a family historian, I can trace my maternal ancestors’ arrival in America from Switzerland over 400 years ago, while my paternal roots as Native Americans extend beyond documented history — that I have been able to trace.
Yet, I sit before you in an oddly uncomfortable chair with the best (though usually silent) writing partner as a lowly partial citizen.
Isn’t it just delightful how we get to pay our full share of taxes and abide by all the responsibilities of citizenship while being denied the same level of protection and freedoms as full-fledged male US citizens?
Women make up 50.5% of the population in the United States in 2023. Yet, because of the takedown of Roe v. Wade, women are now only partial citizens. We are less valuable than men but pay the same tax rate.
It’s truly remarkable how the most qualified individuals to make decisions about women’s bodies are apparently wealthy men in suits rather than, you know, the women themselves. Who would have thought corporations and religious institutions have such a keen understanding of what’s best for us? It’s almost as if women aren’t capable of making decisions about their own bodies.
Almost.
